My basic, quick, tutorial, for those who're curious how to add repos and software in debian. This more geared towards those who're unfamiliar with debian, linux, shell, vim. Proceed at your own risk.
Introduction SteamOS comes by default with some basic applications, these are intentionally minimal to keep the size of the distro down and other reasons which I won't get into. However, you want those videos, applications, cool stuff you enjoy in ubuntu or windows; whatever.
SteamOS comes with a built in text editor call vim, to the non-informed, inexperienced, user, vim is a hassle to figure out the keyboard shortcuts. Their is no GUI. Therefore if you're going to complete this tutorial I suggest you refer to the VI keyboard shortcuts if you have troubles. Another good source would be a basic shell coding cheat sheet. I'm not going to teach you how to navigate it. They dedicate courses to that in colleges across North America.
Procedure
boot steam os and login to gnome environment
2) go to applications tab and open a Terminal.
3) type($): su then hit enter and enter the root password. by default it's 'desktop'.
4) type(#): vi /etc/apt/sources.list

This is Vim, I will teach you a little bit about it, again if you're unfamiliar. It appears basic and dull but it's users are vast and very skilled. Vim can be used as basic text editor or a development IDE their are many plugins and scripts available for whatever your purpose. Our purpose is simple, we just have to add the Debian default repositories. Copy the following and proceed.
5) reopen your terminal (if you minimized it to copy the above), select your cursor (blinking block in terminal), place it somewhere near the top or anywhere where their is room. Press 'i' to enter input mode, right click on the terminal screen with your mouse and press paste. Press esc to exit input mode.
6) not done, we have to save it. To exit vim (cool part about this software), press shift + colon or (:) then type: wq!
this will save the text file with all the debian default repos.
7) you need to add a priority filter to in order to obtain packages from valve's Alchemist rather than the default debian in the instance of conflict. In order to do this, we will do the same thing as step 5 and 6, except copy this:
press 'i' to enter input mode, copy the above and right click to paste. press Esc to exit input mode. again save it with shift+ colon or (:) then type: wq!
this will save a priority list for which repositories to show preference to.
8) type(#): apt-get update
9) type(#): apt-get install xbmc vlc libreoffice
Debian Wheezy Eol
you can now apt-get anything in the debian universe. Enjoy.
Conclusion and warning
I take no responsibility for any conflicts that may arise from my suggestion that you use these combination of repos. I merely suggest such because it's pretty much your only option if you want to use the machine for other purposes.
